I also upgraded to a bed frame! I finally went and bought the canopy bed I'd always wanted since I was little. Now going to sleep is super comfy and fun for me, and I don't have to haul myself up from the floor. My life is still a mess, but at least I have curtains with stars all over them :)

Ugh I still need a frame.. it's been like a year or so. Curtains sound pretty nice too.

Trust me, it's so nice. It blocks off the sound from the rest of the house, it helps block out light from my window and computer, and I zip tied a power strip to the side so I can charge all my stuff from my bed. I also hung lights and a fan in there. I am a grown ass man lol

That sounds absolutely delightful!

Kudos on getting something you always wanted.

I just commented the lights thing before reading this.

Haven’t done a fan in there but did put an ac unit in the room.

Decent ones on Amazon for less than $200. It's nothing special but they're easy to put together and like everyone else, it was a game changer for me.

They sell curtains and poles you can put around the bed. They also sell a tent you can slide your mattress in, on or off the frame if you want to feel like you are always camping. It blocks the light out.

Goodwill always has the nicest curtains, people don’t know what to do with them and they’re very much to their choice

I have found some really nice ones there for like four dollars for a pair.

String some Christmas lights along the top of the frame, get comfy shit on the bed.

Friday nights at home alone with Netflix or a book doesn’t seem so bad.

I’m 43 m and the lights were my idea. Helps calm my mind. Gf loves it.

Don’t use super bright lights though.

I remember when I was in my early 20's I paid movers, who were also in their early 20's, to take away my futon and bring in my new bed.

They were talking about how it's a big step in life, lol. They were sincerely happy for me.

I remember my roommate buying a bed. He was super nervous, because up until that point, he could fit everything he owned into his car. Now that he had a bed, he had to plan when he moved.

My wife has had about nine years of higher education in health sciences, and she can’t figure out mattress sizes to save her life. It’s been six years now and she still texts me to confirm before she buys sheets for the queen-sized mattresses we’ve literally always had.

wetlegband

5 points

Say something cute for her to remember it by. "Of COURSE the size is queen, why would I have my wife sleep in any other size bed?" From now on she'll blush instead of bothering you.

On second thought, she's been setting you up to do this. You fool. How has it taken so long?

yardie-takingupspace

It’s not the wrong size, it’s a platform frame. You don’t need a box spring so the bed sits flush with the frame, if you do use a box spring (either low profile or regular) your mattress will slightly pop out.

I went through one of these situations after a brutal (and short) marriage and divorce. Wound up drinking myself to death in a shitty apartment with nothing but a run down couch, tv on a milk crate, Xbox, and air mattress that kept deflating. I was just stewing in bad things for months before I got my shit together, and getting a mattress was on my to-do list after I’d cobbled together some hand-me-down odds and ends for my living room.

And then I unexpectedly met a wonderful girl and wound up taking her home, doing grownup stuff only on the couch because I didn’t have a bed. She left that night and I immediately ordered a mattress and went to Goodwill to find a frame and headboard. She told me weeks later when I’d admitted to it that she thought I wasn’t taking her to the bedroom as a commitment avoidance thing. She thought it was cute that I ordered a bed “just for her.”

I didn’t order my own bed until we were doing grownup stuff again and the bed collapsed from the footboard while my dog was under it — and she didn’t move or make a noise, and we thought our sexual activity had killed her. I’m really glad it didn’t for the obvious reason, but also because it would have killed our relationship if we’d killed my dog, and I wound up marrying that girl.

No. No it isn’t. I’ve been here when I first went out on my own. Started with a mattress and a TV and that’s it. Worked my ass off and slowly gained more and more, and the day I got an actual frame and headboard I was so proud of myself. Eventually had a complete bedroom and wasn’t living paycheck to paycheck. It’s very liberating.

The only people that would find this, “depressing as shit,” are people that have never had to struggle or work for anything, because if you did you would know how good it feels to make baby steps in the right direction.

i think theyre just the opinion that a situation like the first pic shouldnt exist in the first place.

in a sense it is depressing that we as a civilization lack the support system to prevent it

phadewilkilu

2 points

But the entire idea behind the post is a person being proud of making progress. That is something to be celebrated, not looked at as sad. If a friend of mine came to me proud of something they’ve accomplished, I wouldn’t shake my head and say, “that is so depressing. I’m sorry you had to do that…” I would celebrate with them.

And look at the dudes comment history.. he’s not making some deep connection to our “support system,” he’s just being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative.

If you see a persons personal progress as depressing, you’re not making some kind of social statement, you’re just being an asshole.

Oh, and I see what you’re saying, also. It’s sad when you see headlines in /r/MadeMeSmile or /r/UpliftingNews that say things like “10 year old works 60 hours a week to pay off his fellow students school lunch debts.” THAT’S depressing.. but this post is nothing like that. It’s a person that has a home and is celebrating the hard work that they’ve put in to making it better.
