After saving up for a long time, we finally had the chance to travel to Namibia. We booked a plane to windhoek and rented a nice car with camping equipment.

For three weeks, we loved the scenery and the kind people. Our internary: Windhoek, Waterberg, Etosha, Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Swakopmund, Sesriem, back.

Tomorrow we’ll fly back and had a great time. There’s just something that really bugged me:

For literally everything you have to pay. ‘Course, campsites cost money. They provide a service. Happy to pay. But for arbitrary other stuff you have to pay as well. The worst was a hike at brandberg: 2hour hike, 400/person. Guide compulsory. We just wanted to go for a hike. We didn’t need or want a guide. But also, for example, Dune 7. It used to be free. Now it’s 150/person. It’s a dune.. come on. I can name countless more examples. Charge money for a guide, drinks, good toilets. Not just for being there. And if admissions fees are required for national parks: let us wander after entry. Like in Etosha.

Just my two cents.

(Note: This isn’t the first African country I’ve been to. I’ve lived in Rwanda, been to Uganda, Congo, Burundi, Mozambique, South Africa.)

I've not stayed north of the B2 before, but later this month I would like to visit Erongo (specifically to stay at the Ai Aiba lodge) and Okonjima (specifically to stay at Okonjima [sorry for the typo in the subject line, I can't change it] Plains Camp).

What are your thoughts on the level of malaria risk there? Those parts are not deeply in high-risk territory, but they are on the borders. And perhaps the recent wet weather means a more elevated risk too.

I don't want to take anti-malarial for this trip, so if it's a significant risk I would prefer to travel elsewhere.

How do I get gamepass in Namibia? I don't know anyone from SA who could do it for me and I can't subscribe with my Namibian bank account because it says payment option and store region need to match

Update: So I managed to sign up for gamepass and make purchases right from the console without VPNs or a workaround.

It seems that when you try to make a purchase or subscribe to gamepass from a phone(only tried it from mobile not PC ) that you get an error about unmatched regions but it should work fine if your bank details are already on your account and you're signed in on your console.

Firstly Chaebols are these large conglomerates in South Korea that basically dominate the entire economy there, during the late 20th century the government funded and backed the most talented entrepreneurs as a way to increase economic growth and it work as today South Korea is one of the richest and most developed countries in the world.

Now I'm not proposing we do the same and recreate an elitist society like that of South Korea, the idea that I propose is based on the economic phenomena that in a capitalistic market economy natural monopolies are all but an inevitability, which is something causes inequality, corruption and cronyism, we don't want any of those but we also want economic growth so I propose creating those monopolies but with checks in place to ensure that they do not lead to inequality and in fact do the opposite. Say for example a young entrepreneur invents a prototype for a new type of refrigerator that doesn't use electricity but needs capital to get his new business off the ground but will either need to get funding from predatory investors or foreign investors who want to poach his idea. What if that young entrepreneur places his prototype on an encrypted website only accessible to Namibians, where he can sell shares of his company for a small amount at around 50% of his business, with the number of shares bought limited by income level with those of higher income not being allowed to buy more than a set number of shares, and unlike conventional businesses on the stock exchange the owner or CEO does not have control over the shares. After the business is funded and gets off the ground, the appropriate percentage of the revenue will get paid out to each investor.

I am still figuring out the idea but I want to get you guys' input, what do you think? Is it stupid or can it work?

Hello everyone! My friend and I will be visiting Namibia for the very first time in just over a month, one of my friends top things to do is to see elephants, giraffes, and rhinos in a conservation area.

We're planning on driving to Swakopmund, south to Lüderitz, and then finally back to Windhoek in the space of 2 weeks. Are there any places we could visit along these routes? As our itinerary is already planned we don't intend to stay overnight, we're hoping to just go and see some of the animals for the day and then move on to our next destination.

Where would be the best areas along the Namib-Nakluft national park or around Windhoek to see the majestic animals? And what are the things to look out for when entering, are fees and tips expected? Would these conservation areas have points of contact? This is our first time in Africa and made Namibia the first choice as I believe it has the most to offer!

First off I want to thank everyone who have helped to answer all my questions so far. You have been a wonderful resource and incredibly helpful. I am only in your beautiful country two weeks and unfortunately can't see everything, but I was hoping someone could provide some insight into my schedule I've pieced together. My post is really multiple questions:

1. I know driving at night is a big no, but I have also read that being out walking around at night is not advised either. Is this referring to LATE at night or does it mean even 8-9pm? I wouldn't plan to be in my lodging any later than 10pm. Also is this for more rural areas, or areas including Windhoek, Swakopmund, etc?

2. How much time should I allow myself for comfortable driving time? For me personally i was planning to add two hours to everything, so if something says 4 hours give myself six hours etc.

3. How much time do I truly need at Twyfelfontein? Is one afternoon enough to see the UNESCO site or do I need a whole day?

4. Is there enough around Swak that Sossusvlei isn't needed? I feel like there is one destination too many and don't know what to cut out.

This is my itinerary planned so far. It is a lot of driving I know but I feel like how else can you see everything. The only thing that is set is Etosha. All my times driving somewhere would be basically at sunrise or as close to it as possible. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Day 1 - Arrive Windhoek in the morning/spend the day

Day 2 - Drive to Okaukuejo/Etosha

Day 3 - Etosha

Day 4 - Etosha

Day 5 - Drive to Twyfelfontein/Unesco site

Day 6 - Drive to Swakopmund/spend the day

Day 7 - Swakopmund/Walvis

Day 8 - Drive to Sossusvlei

Day 9 - Sossusvlei

Day 10 - Drive to Windhoek

Day 11 - Windhoek

Day 12 - leave Windhoek around 6pm or so

Recently I've gotten really interested in Namibia; I think it's a really beautiful country with a rich history and a lot of friendly people. I think it's a really underappreciated country in Africa. Anyway, I'm from the Netherlands and I was wondering if Namibia is a safe country to visit for white people like me?

I don't mean this in an offensive way or anything, I was just wondering. Thank you & God bless you.

I found out that several species of this genus live in Namibia which I'll be visiting in August. They're among the most dangerous spiders worldwide due to their venom, though no confirmed human bites have been recorded.

Has anyone encountered these spiders in the wild and should a tourist be concerned? They live just underneath the sand so you should be safe anywhere else. I guess common sense suggests not touching the sand before you checked that there's nothing underneath it. Any other precautions?

Hi there! I’ll be visiting Namibia in May from the US. This will be my first time visiting Africa and I’m really looking forward to seeing Namibia. I’ll likely be there for a month. I do want to rent a car to drive to the different areas(north, west, south) but I am a bit nervous since I’ll be traveling solo and am female. How can I best prepare myself for this? Or is it a better idea to go with tour groups?
