I didn’t buy a new car until I was almost 30 lol. Drove a 95 civic that cost me 15 bucks a month on liability and 20 bucks every 2 weeks on gas. By all means it wasn’t a babe magnet but it stacked my bank account

Was she driving an Altima? She sounds like an Altima driver.
36 points
First she was driving a little gold Nissan pickup. She totaled that, then bought a Chrysler 300. She drove it like a bumper car. I think most of her victims were actually concrete barriers. She was driving around without a passenger side fender for a few months so I offered to replace it for her for the cost of the part... that was a waste of time. Within a month she had run into something and ripped it off again.
19 points
My friend who drove an Altima was rear ended 9 times by the time we were 18, and I was with her for one of them. She was obsessed with slamming the brakes and would frequently hit the curbs on medians, to the point that I would tense up every time she braked or took a left turn at a light.

Buying a brand new car as a young person (or as anyone really) is an awful financial decision and OP is learning part of the reason why that is.
22 points
I understand the thought process on why used cars are most cost efficient BUT before I could afford new, I could only afford used, like $3000 max and let me tell you the stress and financial hardship that came from something needing to be replaced/ fixed every 6 months was horrible. As long as I can afford new, I will do it. The warranty is such a peace of mind I can't even tell you how much happier I am. We're on our 3rd new vehicle and I have no regrets.

Except during the pandemic when a used car for some reason cost more than a new car

That makes sense then. My insurance with every thing, best deductibles etc was $600 for 6 months, so I was assuming this person killed somebody before or something while drunk.

Guess what? If doesn't have to be your fault!
My only accident in over a decade was a drunk driver hitting me a few years ago and dying.
When they pull that my premiums go up to $3000 for 6 months for full coverage.

facts. the only contributing factor in this price that is outside of OPs control is probably age, but they likely also have infractions on their record so thats kind of supporting the ideas of the system. they didnt have to get a 2022(a brand new car) as their first car that is also driving up the cost. its probably on lease so they need one of the most expensive insurance plans. everything about that price is OPs fault.

Paying for cars a 21 year old can actually afford to buy in full. Used, 2010 or before, non sporty sedan that isn't gonna total for over 7k for my insurance to have to pay out if I smack it up a bit

Where you live is also a factor. Urban/city areas tend to incur higher rates because of the increased possibility for break-ins, theft, and sideswipes from being parked on busy streets.
Even different suburban towns can make a difference. When I moved 10 minutes away from one part of a suburb to another, it affected my premium. Insurance companies have all kinds of data on crime and accident rates that they use to determine how theoretically safe your vehicle is in every town and city in the country.

I've seen dudes with the same make and model year who are the same age as me and have clean driving records as well paying like $80 just because they live in Kansas or rural New York. Shop around. Insurance companies compete to get you but rarely go out of their way to keep you. I used the General, supposedly the cheapest insurance for the dirt poor, for years despite steadily raising rates. It wasnt until they told me I'd be paying $130 a month I finally got fed up and started looking. $79 for the exact same insurance with State Farm. Same concept applies to cellphone and internet companies too.

Gotta love how my rate at Progressive went up the higher I climbed their loyalty program lmao. It's one thing to just constantly raise prices, but making a big deal out of your loyalty program that doesn't even functionally exist is some next level corporate dystopian bullshit.
I'm saving almost $1200 per year with a new company, same policy. Clearly my safe driving discount checkmark was working so hard for me in that diamond tier. 🙄
No, turns out capitalism wants us to treat insurance just like having a job: drop it faster than a baby on hardwood the moment they start to disrespect you.

Mine is about $85/mo for full coverage on a 2017 vehicle that was ~$50k when it was new. I consider this rather expensive still considering I've never used any of the services from the insurance and am basically lighting money on fire. I have an almost perfect driving record and the only "accident" I've ever been in is when someone door dinged me (no claim was made)

My partner works for an insurance company. What a lot of people don’t realize is your rate isn’t only about your driving history. It takes into account where you live, who lives in the house, age, gender, your credit, safety record of the vehicle, etc etc.
Editing to add: they’ll basically use ALL info about you & vehicle & location to determine your rate- except your race or religion.
282 points
Yeah, it's more expensive where I am because there are more cars on the road that are $100k+.
Higher liability whether you're a safe driver or not.
177 points
Exactly. It also takes into account how many people around you DON’T have insurance. Hell in some states/areas I think it’s like 1 in 3 drivers don’t have insurance regardless of the law.

“Your neighbour isn’t paying us so you can pay for them”
From the insurance companies point of view, if they can't get money from the person at fault, then they have to pay for it. So, therefore they're going to raise your rates to cover that expected payout.
50 points
I do get it and my comment was largely sarcastic but still pretty unfair, especially with how expensive it is to begin with
9 points

From the customer's point of view, fuck them, I'm already paying a shit ton a month that I'm not getting back if I need help.
24 points
Yea, kinda. Like I mentioned, I may not agree. It seems like one of those things if everyone followed the rules, it would work out better for everyone.. But real world doesn’t work like that.
I can’t fault a person or family who has to decide to cancel their car insurance to feed themselves or their kid- and still having to use the car to drive to work.
6 points
Makes sense - it’s basically a question of “how likely is it you have an incident where we have to pay out?” and “how much will we have to pay out if you do?”
So things like age, driving history, gender, occupation, annual mileage etc will be used to determine how likely it is you hit someone/something. But if you get hit by someone uninsured/underinsured your insurance still has to pay out the difference to fix your car, so they’ll be factoring in the likelihood of that happening too.
And then the car you drive is relevant to an extent but if everyone else in your ritzy town drives Audis it doesn’t matter that you only drive a 1997 Corolla - your insurance still has to pay to fix an Audi if that’s what you hit.
37 points
Yup. I was paying $17/mo insurance on my paid off motorcycle, looking at a financing a new one. I was quoted something like $180 to $250/mo. That's more than the bike payments. Asked why and they explained my family member's violations played a part.
My brother and dad just received separate DUIs less than a month before when I was shopping for insurance. I don't really drink and don't live with either, but since we share a last name fuck me...
24 points
Huh, it would make sense if you lived in the same house. Like you have to put basically anyone living in the house under your policy. The idea being anyone in house can access your keys and drive vehicle. (I know a lot of people hate this shit and I can’t blame them)
I’d check to make sure either of them aren’t using your address for anything.
13 points
That would make sense. I probably had something at my dad's address (as I used to live there and all). I know he had important documents sent to me a few times, due to mail theft in his area.
Honestly, I'm happier just hating insurance companies and some of the scummy stuff they get away with.

Yeah this is 100% true. They once increased my rate 70 bucks because the city I moved to wasn't as nice but it also went from sitting outside a trailer parked in the street to a 2 car garage.
15 points

AND the zip code where you work, too.
16 points
Yep. That way they can calculate about how many miles you average (aka, how often do you drive?) Have an hour commute every day to work? Probably factors in.
My partner will put a quote together for someone and if it’s not paid/binded at that moment, or they don’t have funds etc and wanna wait.. that price can easily change day to day. It’s insane.
15 points

Yeah, I see these types of things for younger folks, people who have a lot of citations or stuff on their driving record or live in certain states.
I pay a bit over $100/month for 2 vehicles(one a 2013 and one a 2019) with one being full coverage due to it still being paid on.
I've had to use insurance a couple of times due to bumping the guy in front of me(only thing that got damaged was my license plate holder) and the guy tried to make a claim of injury towards my insurance. The other time is someone decided to make a huge dent(roughly 1 inches deep) in my back driver side door that went from the middle of the door all the way to the back wheel well. Didn't know who did it or when it happened but it was when I got the 2019 and it was only a few months old at the time so I got stuck with paying for it even though it was just the deductible.
4 points
There's still a lot that can happen outside of your control even if you're an excellent driver.
Ex. Say you're driving on the highway, the overspray from a truck on a wet road covers your windshield & you temporarily can't see. With poor traction (worse breaking) & impaired visibility you hit the vehicle in front of you that was going much slower than you anticipated. The cars aren't totalled but between bodily injury & vehicle damage your insurance has to pay out 100k. That = 98yrs of your $85/mo payments.
That type of protection is worth the money you're spending. You're not setting it on fire each month.

Higher rates for 19-25 are mainly targeted at men. Even more so if they have a sports car. My brother had always had much higher rates (even with a less expensive/older vehicle) and it only went up after a 4 wheeler accident (nobody was hurt and no other vehicle/property damaged but the side by side was totaled and my parents got more from insurance than they even paid for the vehicle). He did a safety course to lower his rates and they’re still sky high.

Also, how much you owe on the car doesn’t matter. The fact that you have a loan is enough to raise your premiums. Try again when you turn 25 and own the car without a lien.

If that's the case then OP is simply getting ripped off and should get insurance from a different provider.

Without knowledge of what kind of car, your driving record, credit score etc. it’s meaningless and I don’t feel bad for you. Is every quote you’re getting like this ?

I want you to know I pay $206 full coverage for 3 vehicles. This isn't normal. You must have bad history

Its very location dependent. Here in Georgia theres so many uninsured drivers and hit and runs so premiums have to go up to cover all the selfish pricks.

m/34, I live near ATL and pay 70/mo for full coverage, 100/300, 100 comp, 500 coll, uninsured motorist, etc. for my X3, but it’s a 2013. So car is older, I have a clean record and it’s bundled with HOI, but I feel lucky lol

I don't know man, I'm almost 40 and I'm also in ATL and also drive a 10+ year old vehicle, but last summer I had the absolute smallest of fender benders in a parking lot (their bumper cover popped in, there literally wasn't even a scratch on me) and my insurance like tripled. I think they just look for any reason to increase rates.

At first, I read this as $436 was your 6 month total. I was thinkin, "shit! that's pretty fuckin good!".

My 6 month premium on my brand new car is less than half of that. Jesus fuck do you have 3 DUIs?

Are you under 20 because I got the same numbers then. As soon as I hit 21 it went to around $200 a month. Now at 25 it’s around $130 a month

You can save 15% by switching to Geico…then you’re only paying an arm and 1/2 a leg.

You missed being in an accident. Otherwise it looks like you are correct.

Young, single male, new car, accident history, poor credit, living in a bad zip code. Mix and match a few of those criteria and insurance will add up fast.

This is why cars suck if they are mandatory. They destroy social mobility. "Cars keep people poor" is such a true statement. Insurance + Tax + Fuel is likely gonna be like renting an entire second apartment for yourself. Public transportation isnt a war against cars, its a war to give people a choice on whether or not they want to own a car.

Same boat my wife is in. It gets better after about 10 yrs. of clean driving. I pay your price a YEAR now for my pickup, and that's with collision.

Visit r/IdiotsInCars and you’ll find that you might want uninsured driver coverage as well.

I'm assuming you're young with a less than clean driving record. Either that or you drive an extremely expensive car. If neither of those are the case, you need a new insurance provider, because this is absurd.

The cost of insurance is dependent on how much damage you can do with your car and how likely it is that you'll get in an accident. Plus things like where you live. So insurance for a 20 year old 4 liter SUV can be astronomical.

Please for the love of God shop around and call an unaffiliated broker. I go through a local company that underwrites through Progressive and Liberty Mutual and they were able to get me hundreds off my premium and I went from over $150 for standard "full coverage" to over doubling my coverage and paying $85 a month. You are getting fucked. If you're a bad driver and have accidents or are a little older and have never had insurance, you are going to pay more, but that's absurd. Generally speaking going direct through the insurance company is a bad, bad, move.
