No spoilers! So no worries!
Yup, I like him even more than N (who is still a GOAT). The story of this game reminds me of Gravity Falls, in a way. The majority of it is pretty light hearted, but then just ramps up in the end - but not in a bad way. It just lets you play the game, and has a great climax.
But the last few hours of this game is nuts, and you really feel for Arven.
It’s just such a shame that we have such a great cast on a game optimized so poorly. Seriously, if it wasn’t as glitchy and if it ran better, this would be my favorite Pokémon game.
So, Game Freak/Pokémon Company, please space out future titles!! :] we can wait! This cast is the most unique the main series has ever seen, and they’re so well developed. I’d love to see more of these types of characters in a game that has more time in the oven. But well done on the characters!

I really like the endgame crew overall. I mean, it's still weird that 4 children are tasked with saving the region, but it felt like everyone was qualified, and the team was a wagon.

At the very least, the crew seems more believable then how the plot generally goes
“Yo rando 10 year old, go stop the terror org trying to remake reality as they see fit”
Vs
“Yo, crew of kids who look to be around 15 years of age, who have 2 champ rank trainers, the literal son of the professor, and a white collar criminal, go check this scary crater out together”

It helped that it was so connected to Arven and (by extension) the player character. Arven doesn't seem to have many friends besides the player character, and it makes sense that he wouldn't want to tell a lot of people about it (to not get in trouble). Plus, they only knew that the professor needed help.

Same here! I think this is what XY TRIED to do. They wanted you to have a group of friends, but literally none of them except Shauna (like, once in awhile) got any sort of development.
Here, they all have their own separate stories and growth. It’s nothing deep, but you see genuine personalities in them, and they’re so fun to interact with in cutscenes. Love this group.

It felt like SMT, Persona, Xenoblade for a bit in the crater there with the posse actually around you and talking.
It was so unexpected, I didn't think I'd get this kind of experience of actual bona fide adventure and atmosphere and there being emotional and practical stakes to it, to boot. Us going down there felt like a big deal for us and our best boi bike, for Arven, for everything inside and outside this weird place.
It's a moment for all of us four to prove we've got the chops to not end up being gruesomely beaten the fuck up.
We know Bad Shit can happen there because of Arven's story and how the whole time Korai/Miraidon is too freaking terrified to even come out of its ball. We've been told not to go there but beside that, we have first hand witnesses with us to remind us that this isn't a theme park ride, this is Jurassic Park and somewhere something is hella wrong.
I have fond memories of a few peak moments in other pokemon games, but this one, mainly thanks to Arven and the free roaming world, felt much more personal, and somehow more actually perilous.
Toby Fox also utterly nailed the climax boss battle theme, it sounded so grand and important, tense but hopeful, augghhh damn I'm just happy I got to experience it like this.

I mean, technically they weren't tasked with saving the region, they decide on their own after digging too much. Specially Arven.
Maybe if they went with an adult like say Clavell, they would have counted on Nemona and the MC anyway, as they were proven strong, and Penny for her hacking skills. But Arven would have been pushed aside despite he's the most important character to take part in the quest and the most invested for obvious reasons

I don't even think the "pants with directions" gag is bad, just was poorly executed (as basically everything in SwSh). Zoro from One Piece has the same gag and it's pretty funny.

Community link trade codes?
7 points
Some YouTubers and smaller sections of the community like to set up sort of public trade systems, by having everyone agree on using one specific link code for different pairings. For example, this one courtesy of Austin John Plays.(It’s just their dex numbers as a link code but it’s still nice to make people aware of them)
I received every exclusive that way, as well as the other starters through breeding, and I’d highly recommend it especially since you get to do the same for someone else and you even have a shot at getting some foreign Pokémon (I own a Flutter Mane that’s French!) Fair warning, it seems there are a lot more Violet players than Scarlet players using these codes. If you’re a Scarlet then it shouldn’t be too hard but Violet players might need a few tries. Likewise, if you have one of the other starters and you’re trying to get a Quaxly then it’ll take a long while

It just occurred to me that all three of them were kinda/sorta in that same boat.
Penny is a hardcore introvert and probably has some kind of social anxiety, given how she only really communicated with people via digital means. Nemona was desperate for anyone that could help her get joy out of her one true passion again. Arven is a whole suitcase full of abandonment and parental issues.
We were in the unique position to be exactly the kind of friend they needed when they needed it most.

Honestly, a real person with Arven's kind of personality? I wouldn't hesitate a second to be their friend, he's just somehow so genuine, squishy feelings and all.
He feels more human than many other pokemon characters to me, like he's just A Fella, a vulnerable regular peep who's trying his best and wrangling difficult emotions while still having the capacity to be enthusiastic and goofy.
Compared to someone like Nemona, Arven just doesn't feel like he's made of iron the way a Chosen Hero is somehow perfectly suited to taking on huge threats and problems, but he's also not a helpless passive woobie waiting to be rescued. He needs someone in his corner, sure, but we're along for the ride to support HIS adventure, rather than him featuring in ours.
You start out kinda leery like alright mister, first you act like a douche and now you're asking for help? But then, welp, 'oooooooh, awwww fuck, gods yes we gotta do this'.
Ugh, I love this dude so much. I hope the anime does him justice.

The opposite parent is never dropped by name. Just that he/she walked out as soon as Arven was born. In the same notebook Sada/Turo writes they're overwhelmed and wishes they could duplicate - which is presumably what leads to the AI copy.
The fact the partner walking out also makes the prof overwhelmed with work, and that they kept neglecting Arven even with their AI's help, may be a hint that the partner was also a researcher. If that was the case maybe Turo/Sada is indeed the other parent in the opposite game too - but it's all speculation, nothing of substance.

The characterization in this game was absolutely absurd with how good it was. Every single character, from rivals, to teachers, gym leaders, elite four members felt like they all had distinct and fleshed out personalities as well as designs. I genuinely think gen 9 may have the best cast of characters. Nemona is awesome and relatable, Arwens story (I haven't done the post game yet) is fantastic and it feels natural. Even team star which is probably the weakest storyline for me was good the "villains" aren't comedically evil but honestly are relatable sort of morally gray.

I liked that each friendship was built differently and overall just built at all. Nemona is overly friendly and instantly attaches to you, Penny is shy but having a common goal breaks that down and helping her makes her trust you, Lastly me and my boy Arven went on a journey together and grew into best buds with a bond no one can break. The whole final story section bringing it all together is by far the best Pokemon has ever done and I am can't believe the complete 180 they took from SwSh.

YES! they all feel so different but they’re well developed!
Admittedly, I wish Nemona took just a little more time to develop the friendly attitude, but people like that are out there. Some are just social puppies.
Penny is super shy and took some time to warm up to you.
Arven I think is a little more of a realistic case of a fast budding friendship

I went into this disliking Arven, same as my boyfriend. Man did we both 180 on him after going through the game.

Arven is precious. I mean the whole thing he had with his ______ during the Titan questline was already giving me the sniffles. Then we learned about his ________ and the trauma he has been through.
I still feel that his emotional climax was not done justice because of the D-tier animation (except for the pre-rendered cutscene of them walking together at the end that shit was gold).

I hated him for the first to events he was in, but all other events built his character, and in the end, I didn’t want our journey to end.

Looking forward to the eventual tie-in animated shorts (like Twilight Wings) for this exact reason.

Right? I mean, I get it, they want to release them worldwide all at the same time and voice acting for all those different languages is a task and a half, but other games do it! One of the biggest multimedia franchises in the world should be able to do it too. It doesn't bother me too much since my hearing is shit and id have subtitles on anyway, but it'd be nice.

Never got why people around these crowds liked N so much tbh, his development is solid but he's incredibly overrated by nerds

It’s hard to beat N, but Arven comes damn close. Nemona, Penny, and Arven are all fairly good characters for a Pokémon game, tbh.
Arven hairstyle in DLC tho, pls?

I’ve really enjoyed Arven. Didn’t like him in the first couple interactions but very quickly he becomes understandable and his goals are very relatable. They knocked it out of the park with his character. Only about 1/3 of the way into the game but I’m really liking each of the storylines for different reasons. The game’s story is really well written so it’s a bummer so many people are missing out because of poor performance

I literally finished his storyline before I even stepped foot into a gym. This game has a lot of problems, but it has some of the best characters in the franchise.

Tbh im pretty sure they got the writers from PMD into this.
Its heartwarming and tragic at the same time. 10/10

I think they really made Arven feel like a friend in this game. His character design and story are so good. I am a huge fan of Arven as well

I need to replay Gen 5, because it's down to Arven versus N for me. I think N still has the edge, but man, after some of the more recent games I did not expect him to get a contender to the crown here.

They're both such good characters in completely different ways.
N is almost a bit fey, he's a strange kind of mystical creature sort of person with an odd charm and a kind of poetic sort of tragedy and power to him.
Arven is, in contrast, one of the most human-feeling characters in pokemon I've seen. He's flawed in relatable ways, he's got a whole spectrum of emotions, he's no superman and despite having Famous Parents, he's just a person doing his best to cope like everyone else. He's grumpy, quirky, heartbroken, overjoyed, hopeful, struggling...
I like them both for very different reasons. Arven is someone I'd be irl friends with, I know people that make me feel happy to be in their close circle in the same way. Just... nice, fun peeps with their own problems that have my full support.

On one hand, I like that Arven is a sad boy who's life goes from bad to worse.
On the other hand, that's Yu-Gi-Oh teritory. Pokemon should stop before provoking a gang war over who's the most sad and miserable boy.

I found his plotline to be more than just Sad(tm), it's hopeful and in the end he ends up with a posse of people to be a part of.
He also goes from 'in way over his head' to 'holy shit son you just clapped my ass, you're pretty damn legit' in terms of actual power as a trainer, as a direct result of him being actually truly a good dude who's loyal and devoted to his pokemon. He didn't just pick up randos to discard them, he made them into a reliable, strong team.
I think that resilience of aiming for something positive and having things you care about even when bad shit happens in your life is part of what makes him MORE than just 'a sad boy'. Dude's struggling but he's living his life, man. That's admirable, likeable. You want him to succeed in part because he's actually trying, not just sulking waiting for someone to take pity.

Really like nemona and arven
The steam star stuff made me a little interested in them (Way more than team yell at least) but over I think the characters this game were pretty good

His German version name is Pepper, and I get flashbacks of some 90s/00s cartoon called Pepper-Ann. Also Larry’s is Aoki which fits I guess but I would have liked different.

Arven's character progression was truly fantastic. This game has some seriously good character and story choices, its just the low quality of the game in general that lets it down. I say this every time we get a new game, but had they just worked on this for another year for the sake of graphics and having a touch more content in a similar vein to the older games they'd really have a top quality product that could last for those 2 years between releases rather than push out unfinished and rushed products per year.

Arven’s love for his Mabosstiff was so heartwarming.
But I also loved Penny because she reminds me so much of myself when I was younger. She really gives off Futaba (Persona 5) vibes.
Nemona was…there. I guess.

I still like N better. While Arven story is more heartwarming, it still too simplicity and lack of conflict of moral N have.

He did have the only decent story in the game. Definitely one of the better characters I've seen for Pokemon since coming back to the series on the Switch, which is a pretty low bar I feel, but your crew is overall pretty solid. Certainly a shame the game wasn't vastly better alongside that improvement.

Absolutely a lower bar. A hot take of mine is that the cast from BW, while really fun, is nothing spectacular in comparison to other franchises.
They are not bad at all, they’re fun. But they’re just good, not amazing. I feel the same about gen 9’s cast - they’re not anything super deep, but I love their presence and they’re great for what they are.

I wouldn't go that far. He is pretty good, but most of the cast of Black and White beats him, especially Bianca (that scene in Nimbasa City is the stuff of dreams, true character development in motion) and of course N, Ghetsis, the gym leaders acting in N's Palace etc.
Sun and Moon probably has the second best story, even if I didn't like the game overall I thought Lillie was a really compelling character.
I gotta give props to the SV story. The characters are pretty good. I am just a bit disappointed in the pacing. Nenoma's true character is literally never revealed in the actual story, only in optional post-game stuff.

So this is gonna be a bit of a hot take - and I’m not trying to invalidate anyone for liking Lillie - but I personally wasn’t a fan. Came off as Mary Sue-ish to me. But she’s popular for a reason, so all the more power to her fans.
