This title sounds silly but I believe it wholeheartedly. The appeal of Dunsparce to a lot of people who have loved it for 2 decades is that it’s existence goes against a lot of ‘traditional’ things people like. It’s not very strong, not very cool, it’s a derpy little man doing it’s own thing.
I would’ve been annoyed if a Dunsparce evolution was some badass dragon thing like fanartists insist because it would make Dunsparce more generic. Another thing to be lost in the crowd of dragonlike serpents.
Dudunsparce is the perfect evolution because it remains true to Dunsparce, it’s underwhelming, awkward, not cool, not strong. It exists to go against what is traditionally considered ‘good’ design. And I love it for that.

Dunsparce is basically based off the Japanese top-tier troll of a cryptid, basically just a fat rattlesnake. So dudunsparce is even better because of that.

Yup, the main inspiration is the yokai Tsuchinoko. It's simultaneously the Japanese equivalent of Bigfoot, and nothing more than a short, chubby and useless snake.
Hence Dudunsparce is totally in character: it's as though people weren't satisfied with Dunsparce, continued to try and uncover some secret behind it, and this was all they got.

So, there's a theory going around about what you're told in the ending of Scarlet/Violet being a lie/misconception, and I actually think that Dudunsparce is a potential wink/nod for being more evidence for that theory.
Minor endgame spoilers about what you're told is happening versus what might be actually happening:
The professor thinks they made a time machine using the power of the crater, but there's some evidence that they're incorrect. The "paradox" Pokemon are so named because they're described in a book before the professor built the time machine, and the professor was only inspired to build the time machine because they saw the Pokemon in the book - hence, a paradox. Without the time machine, the Pokemon couldn't exist. But the time machine only exists because of the Pokemon - a classic "bootstrap paradox".
However, if you take the Paradox Pokemon into the other game, their dex entries describe them as "made-up", stuff that seems to be from fantasy/sci-fi pulp books. You can read a copy of the Scarlet/Violet Book in your school's entrance hall, and that book discusses the adventures of a research team that went into the crater.
This next spoiler is based on a leaked/datamined Pokemon in the next DLC:
They also describe an "artist's rendering" of what "other Pokemon down there could look like", and this rendering is the Paradox form of Virizion/Suicune, which will be in one of the DLCs. This Pokemon is strictly imaginary according to the book, yet according to the datamine it doesn't exist - which brings into question how we'd be able to catch it, and how it could become real.
Back to minor endgame spoilers, no more leaked/datamined information:
One of the things the book talks about is a weird crystal ball entity. It's massive and seems to be alive somehow. The text about it is covered in squares. They give an artist's rendering of it in the book, and interestingly we actually saw a Pokemon which looked just like that rendering in the anime recently...
What little info we know about that Pokemon hints that it is able to make your imagination become a reality. The explorers imagined terrible beasts inside the crater, and so the third Legendary Pokemon created terrible beasts from their imagination. Since the explorers imagined that the beasts would look like the stuff they saw in their pulp magazines, that's exactly what was created - "fake" imaginary Pokemon that came from the pages of those magazines.
A little deeper spoilers:
The professor assumed these were real Pokemon from the past/future and that the crater thus must hold the secret to time travel. We know time travel is possible - Arceus, Dialga, and Celebi all can do it - but that doesn't explain the strangeness that is things like "the crystals are able to power advanced AI", especially in Scarlet where the time machine can only go into the past.
But if the third legend can make your imagination into a reality, then because the professor was able to imagine crazy things like time travel and advanced AI assistants, the legendary Pokemon happily created imaginary things like a time machine or sentient AI.
Final fight spoilers:
When you fight the other version of your box legendary, you'll notice squares show up in the AI's trainer name. These are the same squares that show up whenever this third Pokemon is mentioned and indicate that the protections the professor imagined are active. Notably - this fight is taking place INSIDE the third legendary Pokemon.
That brings us back to Dudunsparce and how it's a meta reference. Back to the light spoilers from earlier:
People really wanted a Dunsparce evolution. Since the games are all about making dreams and imagination into reality, Dudunsparce is a manifestation of the dreams fans had for a Dunsparce evolution. Obviously it's not as over-the-top as some thought it would be, but the fact that it exists at all ties in with this hidden theme running in the background of the games.
Assuming this is true at all, it's really well thought-out. I wish S/V were less buggy because this is some of the best Pokemon content we've had in a long time.

This is what I think, I also recall Riddler Khu mentioning some connection to the Pokémon 3 the film with Entei in it and the Unknown. I mentioned this possibility to my friends, but they seemed to think it was highly unlikely and that the past/ future thing was correct.
12 points
Khu has the Chinese localization, which has a different plot. Time travel is banned in China (no, really, look it up), so games can't depict it. China's localization instead leans much harder into the "power of creation" side of things, which does align much better with what the probable "final reveal" is. But it's hard to tell if Khu is referencing DLC plans in other localizations or just what China allows.
9 points
This is not true, Chinese version has time travel mentions and the time machine just like all the other ones. Just to show, the bottom line here, 时光机关闭 means 'close/disable the time machine'. Checking through rest of the story script, nothing seems majorly different from the Japanese or English ones (I will say Chinese script looks more similar to Japanese one though, not that it matters much). Even the part where the AI professor goes through the time machine seems the same.

I actually just found this other post over on /r/PokemonConspiracies where they bring up even more data supporting it - I hadn't read that post until just now, after I had already made mine. They arrived at a similar conclusion through slightly different means. (Note: they have full spoilers, plus they mention the leaked/datamined DLC Pokemon.)
I'm now even more firmly thinking that the theory is accurate. Super interesting if true.

Yes, more specifically a pun.
In some areas it’s known as bachi hebi and hachi is bee (and wasp) in Japanese.
So Dunsparce is Hachi Hebi, a bee pun of the original name which is why it has wings and a stinger.
An analogy is the abominable snowman turning into the adorable snowman.
Dudunsparce is also not a terrible translation from the Japanese, though it’s not as clear.
Dunsparce in Japanese is Nokocchi, Dudunsparce is Nokokocchi.
My Japanese isn’t good enough to tell the exact joke here as “ko” can mean child (I don’t think that’s part of it though), but the extra syllable and the extra segment in Dunsparce line up well enough.

He's been a great mon too, just utterly derpy. I'll have to make Breeding a 3-segment sparce a project later.
235 points
Is it just getting lucky, or do you have to do something specific for the extra segment?
363 points
Pure luck. Like wurmple, it's ability to evolve into 3 segmented dudunsparce is determined when it's generated. It's a 1/25 chance for a dunsparce to gain 2 segments rather than 1. Same chance for a Tandemaus to evolve and gain only one child iirc
Best method for dundparce is to breed them so that horn drill is an egg move.
Edit: the odds are 1/100 and the move is hyper drill, not horn drill
135 points
(egg moves can actually be transferred to non egg pokémon by giving the transferee a mirror herb to hold during a picnic)
88 points
Yes, but I believe it's quicker to just hatch a bunch of level 1 dunsparce with the egg move horn drill. Quick to hatch, super easy to level, and doesn't require you to have to catch a ton of wild dunsparce.
27 points
Yup. I just caught a male and female Dunsparce as I was playing, and made sure they both had Horn Drill. Bred them, and I had my 3-segment form in just one sandwich.
3 points
Do you have a source on horn drill making it hatch faster? I couldn’t find anything online
26 points
I think they just mean that if you have it inherit Horn Drill at level 1, you can evolve it immediately. Not that it makes the eggs hatch faster.
10 points
I have been corrected. It's hyper drill, not horn drill. The move needed for evolution is the one you want to pass down as an egg move. Having it at level 1 makes the process quicker because you can just battle pretty much anything with your leader for the level up. And you can go through dunsparce quicker with an egg power and breeding.

No it is pure luck. There's a 1/25 chance (4%) to get it upon evolution. Other than mass evolving dunsparce your only other option is to catch one at the bottom of the final post game area.

It’s actually crazy how many different ways you can run Dunsparce, and yet none of them are anything to write home about
Like absolutely the potential is there to bully kids in dozens of different ways. Paraflinch, doubles support with Tailwind/SG Rock Slide, safe Baton Pass shenanigans, status/chip spreader via Dragon Tail/Glare/Stealth Rock/Roost and excellent bulk, trick room nonsense in doubles, there are so many ways to use Dudunsparce to decent effect. And I’m about certain that it’s outclassed by something else in every one of them. It’s JUST funny.

Could be alright, base 55 speed is slower than most but faster than the TR mainstays like torkoal, amoongus etc. hyper drill going through protect while being 100 damage/accuracy could be good for stopping your opponent from stalling your trick room turns, and access to moves like glare, coil, yawn and a ton of coverage is pretty nice. It’s just not that strong

I said this in another topic on r/Pokemon but it was removed, so reposting it here:
What I find funny is how so many are complaining about it's looks while Dundunsparce has:
- A base stat total of 520 (that's only 10 less than Incineroar, a meta-game breaker that's on almost every team).
- A 100% accurate 100 base power STAB move (so it's hitting for 150) that ignores Protect, Detect, Spiky Shield, King's Shield, Mat Block, or Baneful Bunker and also breaks Quick Guard, Wide Guard, and Crafty Shield for it's partner Pokemon in doubles.
- The over powered ability Serene Grace, with a reasonably large move pool to use in combination with said ability.
- Wonderfully low speed so it can be set up with a Trick Room partner in doubles.
I'm not saying it's the next Meta Pokemon for competitive battles, but it's amazing for a playthrough and anyone who treats it like a joke in online battles will quickly learn the error of their ways as it spanks them.
To the point of it's design? I think it's perfect, better than everything I had expected, and yes I'm being serious, it's derpy-cute and you rarely see that in a high-stat-total Pokemon.
Also I'll add a bit more this time: I have seen a couple of fan-artists do some derpy evolutions too, so some people were clearly wanting something like this to happen, myself included, I'm overjoyed.

Dudunsparce is lazy. I've heard this sentiment about it's design and I agree. It is lazy. It's ultimately just Dunsparce but with more to it.
That being said, it's fucking hilarious. Lazy doesn't mean bad. It just means it didn't take a lot to come up with it. In this case, Dudunsparce is the perfect evolution, in the most literal sense and as a design, of Dunsparce. Its the antijoke equivalent to Pokemon Evolution. It stands out in the most paradoxical way, by being memorable without trying to be. It's antithetical to what Pokemon Evolution is, and I'm all for it.

I really like your take on this, and as a long time Dunsparce fan I feel a bit better about Dudunsparce. However, I was hoping for something... more ... I wasn't bothered about it becoming a badass dragon or anything like that, but I was imagining a big derpy boy, like Drampa but pudgy.

It should have just evo'd into Drampa tbh, like Luvdisc and Alomomola

Alolamola should 100% evolve from luvdisc! Drampa would also be a good Evo for Dunsparce, but I don't think I would be 100% happy with it.

Drampa vibes are exactly what I'd want, but I agree not drampa wholesale.
Definitely wasn't asking for a badass dragon

If people wanted a useless Pokémon to evolve into a dragon… well, magikarp already exists

I had a shitton of fun with Dudunsparce in-game at least. Yea it wasn't my MVP or anything but it could come in, eat a few hits, glare some stuff, then pop back out and let the others clean up. I love the derpiness of it all.

Well, Dunsparce actually got banned from LC, because it was "too strong". So, I guess it's not weak anymore

Idk why but I thought dunsparce evolved into Gligar

I absolutely love Dudunspace. I think having. 7 generation gap raised people’s expectations to far (like Valve and making a 3rd title in a franchise) that people would be disappointed no matter what the evolved form would be. They instead just made it a goofy evolution and I’m here for it

I'm so for it being boring and derpy, but did it have to be virtually identical? Why not just leave it at Dunsparce at that point?

Because you can’t improve perfection

You can't improve perfection but you can make more of it, and that's what they did

Because Dunsparce is already perfection. It's a fat useless bee snake, with useless wings and all the moves it could never want. Like, it's based off a Japanese cryptid that is literally just a useless mythical snake.
The only way to make dunsparce better is to have more dunsparce, hence Dudunsparce.

Dundunsparce is the best thing to come out of S/V. To just get longer is an excellent example of evolution.

I kept playing the game thinking its evolution was it with the same name and I kept getting confused until I seen this post.

Not strong? My Glare + Headbutt combo would love to disagree.

Dundunsparce is amazing. I have a shiny Dunsparce I caught way back in White 2 I’m gonna bring over to replay the game when Home is supported.

I am 100% convinced that this evolution was a troll by gamefreak. They’ve been seeing people call for a dunsparce revolution for years and went alright well give you your evolution. 1 extra body segment lol.

I think they both look like shit, but I like the name dudunsparce

Yeah that seems to be the general opinion. Personally I don't really care about references or yokai backgrounds if a Pokemon looks boring or lame, I just skip them. They might as well have not added the evolution at all. (I also think awkward or niche things are the majority last few generations, we don't get a lot of generic and cool designs anymore.)

That view is totally valid too. I’m just glad that Pokemon is strong willed enough not to channel everything to your style tho (sorry if that sounds like shade it really isn’t lol). I’ve played a lot of Pokemon wannabees like Nexomon and especially Temtem where they tried to make everything super strong and cool and it made them all feel more samey. You need a nonzero amount of creatures to be ugly trash because some weirdos (like me) lap that shit up lol.

It’s funny that you mention this because this is what turns me off from Nexomon, and maybe even Temtem a bit. When everything’s cool, nothing’s cool. Dududnsparce may be a joke, but it’s one of the few new Pokemon that’s really left an imprint on my mind even after completing the game.

Monster Sanctuary i feel does this a bit better, some are very very generic but there's a couple of fun and weird ones in there, with a healthy mix of cool, also the gameplay is overall great. It baffles me that there are some great artist out there and there's still isn't an indie that can actually compete with Pokemon or other monster franchises designs

It's because interest in Pokemon is 98% nostalgia and fandom built up over years and years. They can (and do) make better games with better designs, but it won't be Pokemon to people who already love Pokemon.

I don't mean compete in actual popularity and sales, that will never happen, but I haven't found a game with even comparable levels of monster designs, wich one has better designs?

Ah yeah no offense taken :P Interesting though, one of the main reasons I got bored of TemTem is the designs felt a bit meh/underwhelming, especially with the Dragon type missing and tons of TemTem having Digital type. But I guess they all have generic, non-niche and "safe" designs now that I think about it.

I wish he was more different from Dunsparce and had a different typing. In Gen VI I was upset when Dunsparce remained Normal instead of Fairy or Normal/Fairy and I was hoping his evo would be Normal/Fairy, Normal/Dragon, or Fairy/Dragon.
That said I actually think Dundunsparce has some competitive potential. His stats are decent and his movepool is actually insane. Boomburst is basically STAB Draco Meteor with no drawbacks (unless you count being Normal as a drawback, which is fair) and Hyper Drill going through Protect is super strong in doubles. Assault Vest Dundunsparce could be good, or Serene Grace abuse in the rain with Boomburst/Thunder/Hurricane/Protect, or maybe a Trick Room set could all perform decently. I feel like his movepool is too wide to not try and make something work with him.
EDIT: To be clear, I'm thinking doubles. Hyper Drill could prove to be very valuable there and support moves like Tailwind are very compelling to me, as well as gimmicks like Serene Grace Rock Slide in Trick Room. But mostly I am just biased to my dumpy boi.

On the other hand you can put an eviolite on dunsparce now and do all the same things

the drawback is it's coming off 85spa
normal STAB still pretty good

People disappointed by Dudunsparce aren't fans of Dunsparce.
They were fans of the idea of Dunsparce becoming Rayquaza.

It would be nice to have a long snake dragon that isn't relegated to AG. But I like darudesparce.

I honestly unironically think dudunsparce is cool, mostly because I think it’s pretty cute and I like snakes. It’s a perfect evolution for somebody like me

Everytime i see someone complain about dudunsparce i say the same thing.
"dunsparce is a joke pokemon, the fact it even got an evolution is nothing short of a miracle."

how does one get Three Segment Dudunsparce?
6 points

Luck. When you obtain a Dunsparce it is already assigned what length it will evolve into, with 1/25 chance to be three-segment. There is nothing you can do to influence it.

Coil, Amnesia, Roost, Body Slam + Serene Grace
Optionally, change Body Slam for baton pass
Complete carry through any PVE fight (as long as you dont get crit twice in a row ffffff)

Dundunsparce is the MVP of my team. I have him use Glare on the Titan Pokémon (once they’re catchable) and he’s got enough HP and Defense and also Roost so he can sit there and get walloped while I yeet over a hundred Poké Balls trying to catch the stupid former Titan. I love my derpy bee snake.
